The process to choose a right director begins with an artist compelling to have a renowned director. Some might prefer Samuel Bayer because of his direction skills in Green Day’s ‘American Idol’. Basically, a director who gets good amount of circulatory work on MTV is a right choice.
Though the artist may not be knowing him or her through looks but they know him or her through MTV. Then it becomes the job of the commissioner to understand the ideas of the artist and to bring on the right and talented director.
First, the artist needs to tune up with the commissioner about the shortlisting of the director for the video. After that, the label need to call the director and explain the project. Further, the label need to forward the song or any other related information about the video to be made to get a basic idea of the shoot location, general budget and due date for the shoot.
This information is given to the director because he or she has to a descriptive treatment regarding his or her opinion about the video. Though some directors may have treatment writers, some may prefer to write on their own.
The treatment from the director is read by the commissioner. He or she, upon understanding the ideas, decide to accept or reject that director. There might be too conditions of rejecting that director. First condition is he or she might be too expensive.
Second condition is he or she may lead the wrong image of the artist. At the end, the artist and the related cast and crew of the video review everything and take a unanimous decision to choose the right director.
Jill Kaplan once in an interview indicated that if the budget of one director is higher than the other, the major deciding factor is achieved over which the director gets the job. Some other factors affecting the decision include the potential of the director, better track record of hit videos, or if one seems ‘hungrier,’ therefore providing more ‘bang for the buck’.
